The "TL;DR" (Too Long; Didn't Read)

Deskly is built on a simple philosophy: Your data is yours. The core tracking functionality of Deskly operates entirely on your local machine. Your screen time data, including the apps you use and websites you visit, lives in a folder you choose and is never uploaded anywhere unless you explicitly turn on the optional cloud sync feature. Deskly does use anonymous, opt-out product analytics (via PostHog) to understand feature usage — never your screen time content — and you can turn that off too.

1. Introduction

Welcome to Deskly ("we," "our," or "us"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring you have complete control over your data. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you visit our website (deskly.in) or use the Deskly desktop application.

2. The Deskly Desktop Application

Deskly is designed to be a local-first application.

2.1. Screen Time Tracking Data

All data collected by the Deskly desktop application regarding your computer usage, including but not limited to open applications, window titles, and website URLs, is stored locally on your device in your Vault. We do not transmit, upload, or sync this tracking data to our servers or any third-party servers unless you explicitly enable the optional cloud sync feature described below.

2.2. Location of Data

You choose the directory where your tracking data ("Vault") is stored. You have full access to view, modify, export, or delete this data at any time. It is stored in a readable JSON format.

2.3. Optional Cloud Sync

Deskly offers an opt-in cloud sync feature for backing up and syncing your Vault across devices. This feature is disabled by default — your data stays local unless you turn it on. If you choose to enable cloud sync, your Vault contents are encrypted in transit and stored on our servers for the sole purpose of restoring and syncing your data; you can disable cloud sync and delete the synced copy at any time from the app.

2.4. Analytics and Diagnostics

The Deskly desktop application uses PostHog, a product analytics provider, to collect aggregate usage and diagnostic events (for example, which features are opened or whether the app crashed) so we can understand what's working and fix bugs. This analytics collection is opt-out and never includes your screen time data, window titles, website URLs, or any content from your Vault. If you sign in to a Deskly account, your analytics activity is linked to an internal account identifier (plus whether an email/name are on file — not their actual values) so we can understand usage across your devices; this link is never used to inspect your Vault contents. You can disable analytics entirely from Settings at any time, whether or not you're signed in.

3. The Deskly Website and Accounts

While the desktop app operates offline, we provide an optional account system via our website (deskly.in) for basic user management, authenticated via WorkOS (including Google OAuth).

3.1. Information We Collect Automatically

When you visit deskly.in, we may automatically collect standard operational data, such as your IP address, browser type, and operating system, strictly for the purpose of serving the website securely and reliably.

3.2. Information You Provide to Us

If you choose to create an account or sign in to Deskly using a third-party provider like Google, we collect:

3.3. How We Use Account Information

We use this information solely to:

3.4. Website Analytics

The deskly.in website itself also uses PostHog to record anonymous interaction events — such as page views, navigation menu opens, link clicks, section views, and download button clicks — tied to a randomly generated identifier stored in your browser, not to your identity. We use this solely to understand which parts of the website are useful and to improve it; it is never combined with your desktop app usage data. PostHog's session replay capability is built into the website but is currently disabled — we do not record video-style replays of your visits. If you sign in to a Deskly account through the website, that browser identifier is linked to your account (email, and whether a name is on file) so we can understand your journey from visitor to signed-in user.

4. Third-Party Services

We use the following trusted third-party services to operate the Deskly website, desktop app analytics, and authentication system:

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information or email address to any third parties.

5. Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect the information transmitted to our servers (such as utilizing HTTPS and secure JSON Web Tokens). However, please be aware that no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure.

The responsibility for the security of your local screen time data lies with you and the security of the device where it is stored.
